Vehicle Tuning
There are common misconceptions that there is only one type of car remapping and the outcome of the process is always the same. This is incorrect. There are a number of techniques that commonly classed as the same technique, but a really very different. Have you ever thought to yourself what a remap does to your vehicle and could it be detrimental to your vehicle existence? If so, please read the following as we try and explain briefly the difference between ECU Remapping, OBD Remapping and Chip Tuning. For further advice regarding any of these services, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we can happily help you work out what you require and whether your concerns are valid. We specialise in vehicle remapping regardless of what vehicle you may have.
ECU Remap
Firstly, the ECU is the abbreviated version of the term “Engine Control Unit”. This is the “brain” of the vehicle whether it be a car, lorry, or motorcycle. The ECU is commonly known as the Engine management System by users also and is a small electronic box that optimises the performance and operation of a vehicles engine.
The main purpose of an ECU Remap is usually to increase the performance of vehicles. Due to laws in different countries differing in terms of emission and their climates being very different, no car leaving a show room will leave at the most optimum performance level. The settings for a standard ECU are set to a level to accommodate usage anywhere where the car is sold so performance is not a priority by any means.
Also any modifications to the car such as air filters, engine modification and exhausts systems etc. will also further affect the efficiency of a vehicle. When tampering with how a vehicle operates in terms of intake and output, it will be more of a necessity to remap a car’s engine to take into account the non standard “bolt ons”. With different fuel and air intake to the engine, the standard ECU configuration will be further inefficient as it will not be able to fully utilise the modifications benefits. Thus, its best to apply your vehicle modifications as needed and then get your car remapped to take into account how your car runs and its particular environment that it runs in. This will give you the maximum performance for your diesel or petrol vehicle. The process of remapping is usually conducted by modifying the ECU state. This usually involves using an OBD tool to either edit the current ECU or replacing the ECU in its entirety to gain the maximum output from your vehicle.
OBD Remapping
OBD remapping is the abbreviated version of On Board Diagnostics. This process has been around for many years and uses the vehicles own self diagnostics and reporting capabilities. The storage of such data by the vehicle means that data can be accessed from the vehicle and the state of the vehicle and its operating environment can be examined by simply connecting to the vehicles OBD port. This readily available data allows users to read the OBD and then edit it accordingly based on how the vehicle is performing and how it could possibly perform, if a few tweaks were conducted in particular sub systems of the vehicle. With vehicle these days becoming very much more electronic and OBD becoming very much more prominent, this type of remapping has become more and more powerful in what it can achieve over the years since its start over 30 years ago.
Chip Tuning
This is the process or modifying or changing the EPROM chip on an ECU of a vehicle. This process is readily used as it can promote increased performance such as emissions and better fuel consumption. The main reason this process is done is for better car performance in terms of acceleration and top speed.
Due to vehicles now becoming more and more dependent on electrical control, the efficiency of operations such as the chip tuning and car remapping has diversified and become a very powerful tool. More and more parts of a car that are controlled by the ECU and the OBD can be modified or edited to dramatically increase gains in vehicles performance. The vast components of vehicles today that are controlled electronically means that tweaks can be applied across a vehicle to give you very powerful increases in diesel performance or any type of car remap with increases of up to 40% in power achievable.
